I went out and sprayed the weeds tonight. As I got near the back gate I thought I saw something quite big. I looked again and discovered it was a pair of whiskers and a cat's nose. There's a friendly cat who lives over the road* and he was at my back gate, lying down looking under it and watching me. He didn't come in, just rolled around and watched.
Once I'd finished I went in and washed my hands (the kitchen's at the front of the house). When I returned I found the cat at my open back door. I'm sure he comes in my garden when I'm not looking, but in this case I didn't really want him near the weedkiller. But I didn't even have to say anything - he saw me and walked down the garden and under the gate. I followed him to stroke him and he's still there - sat at my back gate, but looking out. I can hear some activity out there, so he's probably watching that.
If only he could talk and we could train him to bite criminals, he'd make a fantastic neighbourhood watch all on his own.
*I know where he lives because in the winter I often see him in the upstairs front window, watching the world
