It took me a little while to get used to the change from athletics from swimming, but now I'm loving the swimming. I still record it, partly because it starts before I finish work, but also because I'm not that interested in all the chat. Mostly I just like the swimming. And they repeat bits that they showed earlier/the previous day and I don't need to see it that many times. It's just a shame there's only two days of it left. Then I have to get used to athletics again, at the end of next week.

I had forgotten the Winter Olympics and the Commonwealth Games are both next year. Annoyingly, both on the other side of the world, although it does at least give me the evenings to catch up on the curling and other sports. The Winter Olympics is in February, Paralympics in March and Commonwealth Games in April. And then in May the tennis on TV season starts and before I know it it'll be summer and I won't have had time to watch any non-sports on TV for months.

It did occur to me that this year I haven't been to any live sports whatsoever. I haven't even been to the theatre or to see comedians. I thought about going to the last Saturday of Wimbledon, but the weather was crap. So that was probably a good decision, although there were spaces on court 3, where the wheelchair men's doubles was played. I thought about going to the Para-athletics last Saturday, but the weather forecast was for rain and I've done sitting watching sport in the rain and cold before and it's not fun. And as it happened I had to clean the house anyway. But London is bidding to have the World Para-athletics championships back in two years, so I can go then. And the Commonwealth Games is bound to come back to this country sooner or later.

I did manage to squeeze some fic writing in. After a Twitter conversation about ships with the Thirteenth Doctor, I wrote a Thirteen/Missy (very short) fic:
The Love of an Enemy (334 words) by paranoidangelDoctor Who (2005)
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Thirteenth Doctor/Missy
Summary: Missy needs a friend. Spoilers for The Doctor Falls.

And last week's Last Leg made me want to write more Josh/Jonnie, so I did:
Bromance, Showmance (594 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: The Last Leg RPF
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Josh Widdicombe/Jonnie Peacock
Summary: Jonnie confronts Josh about his bromances.

This is going to be one of my Yuletide fandoms this year (again). But when I posted this the Josh/Jonnie relationship tag didn't come up. So I found one of my Yuletide fics and discovered that's because there were only three fics with that relationship and I wrote all of them for Yuletide last year.

(I haven't posted a Never Seen Star Wars post for July yet because everything stops for Wimbledon. I'll post one in a fortnight.)

I wrote some fic! I started a Librarians fic a while ago because I realised that I wanted to write more Flynn and Cassandra friendship. And because I have post-ep fics for two other season 3 episodes, I clearly needed another one. And then last night's Doctor Who prompted me to write a fic related to it.

There are spoilers for The Librarians 308 And the Eternal Question, and last night's Doctor who below.

I have written something that's not for a ficathon or a fest or any sort of deadline! Well, I say written, I have finished something. Two things in fact - I started them both shortly after the Spooks film came out. One was nearly finished, one was so finished I just fixed a couple of typos and declared it done.

It's good to a) finish something on my length WIP list and b) write in a fandom I haven't written in for a while. And as a by-product I realised I had, without noticing, now got a diagonal line on my Gen Prompt Bingo card. Or I will, once I find something to fit in the wild card. And then I can get another card for the latest round, that will hopefully help me finish some other WIPs.

I did choose these two because they were the closest to being finished, for the sense of accomplishment. I do now feel accomplished - let's hope that continues on to help me finish some of the other things on my list.

The Better Bad (1156 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Spooks | MI-5
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Dimitri Levendis, Erin Watts, Harry Pearce
Additional Tags: Post-The Greater Good
Summary: The reason why Dimitri wasn't in The Greater Good. Spoilers for The Greater Good.

Undercover Relationship (1256 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Spooks | MI-5
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Dimitri Levendis/Erin Watts
Characters: Dimitri Levendis, Erin Watts
Additional Tags: Undercover
Summary: Dimitri and Erin attempt to have a relationship, but being in MI-5 doesn't make it easy.

Het Swap

Het Swap authors were revealed on Wednesday and this is the first chance I've had to talk about it since then. The whole ficathon has been kind of hilarious, in ways that will shortly become clear.

Reveals have happened so I can talk about Chocolate Box! Well, most of it I could have talked about before, but just didn't have the time anyway.

Interestingly, it felt like most people responded to comments before reveals, so I have no idea who wrote anything. I left mine until reveals because it just feels odd to me to reply to comments when no one knows who I am.

I did comment on everything I read and liked and did manage to come up with more than just "I liked it" although I found it hard with short fics.

Yuletide

Jan. 1st, 2017 12:24 pm
paranoidangel: PA (PA)

For Yuletide I got another fic by Selenay (which I never guessed was her at all). The first 40-Love fic I've received!

Revelation in Three Acts (3715 words) by Selenay
Fandom: Cornetto "40 - love" Commercial
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Debbie/Maria Fernandez
Characters: Debbie (Cornetto "40 - love" Commercial), Maria Fernandez, Original Female Character(s)
Summary: There are certain promotional appearances Maria has never been able to say no to, but it takes a conversation with a stranger to understand why.

And then I wrote 8 stories - outside of Yuletide I only wrote 7 stories, and one of those was written at the same time. So it was a very productive time all of a sudden!

I was starting to think it would be the last one revealed! But I wrote:
Tea and Biscuits (1225 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctor Who (2005)
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Eleventh Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Sky Smith
Summary: Sarah Jane had seen the Doctor a few times since he dropped her off in Aberdeen. All by chance and none when he knocked at her front door. Until now.

When I signed up for some reason Eleven/Sarah was one of the relationships I didn't offer. I couldn't think why but never got round to adding it. Helpfully, though, getting [info]dbskyler meant I could write any of the requests and it was this one that gave me an idea of what to write. I actually wrote it during my very productive period while off work (on 'holiday' and ill) and got it done within about a week of getting my assignment.

I'm so behind on everything I should be doing. I meant to get some stuff done this week and didn't. And then thought I'd get it done around the tennis, but there one of Friday's matches was on Saturday and now it's too hot to do anything. I do at least have a clean house (after not cleaning it for five weeks it was awful).

So I'll get to one of the things on my list and talk about what I wrote and received for Not Prime Time.

I got a lovely Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan fic, which I enjoyed in more ways than I could describe. Especially as I'd forgotten that I was getting a fic out of things and couldn't remember any of the fandoms I'd asked for.
Unconventional Approaches to Conflict Resolution (2882 words) by weakinteraction
Fandom: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars Prequel Trilogy
Characters: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn
Summary: A mission to a remote planet goes wrong for Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon.

And I wrote an Enterprise fic - my first proper one (the only other one is a Farscape crossover drabble).
Fire to the Finish (2076 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Star Trek: Enterprise
Characters: Jonathan Archer, Malcolm Reed
Summary: Archer and Reed take part in a race.

I saw the request for this in a letter and almost took one of the characters off my offer because I hadn't considered writing those two characters with each other. But then I realised that one of the things I like about exchange ficathons is writing something I wouldn't usually, and then I really wanted this assignment. My recipient wanted slash, which wasn't going to happen, but they were happy with friendship, so I wrote that and put in some bits that hopefully can be read as pre-slash, if nothing else, with the right rose-tinted glasses on.

When I wrote my last post I couldn't hear properly out of my left ear, which is a sign that I might be about to get labyrinthitis. And by might I mean in my optimistic dream world. I wasn't quite as bad as the last time I had it, where I didn't get out of bed for a few days. But it was bad enough that even though Wimbledon was on, I was to dizzy to watch much of it and ended up listening to it on the radio.

I was just getting over that, after the best part of a week when I got a UTI. Which one of the doctors I spoke to said was "uncomfortable". Which is not the word. That really made me ill. It didn't help that although I'd be in bed for 12-14 hours a night, I'd only be able to sleep for about 5-6 of those hours. It meant I was too tired to listen to the tennis and mostly had it on TV to help the time pass. And fall asleep to. I've slept through some very interesting matches...

I have managed to recover just in time to finish my NPT fic before reveals. And post my Unconventional Courtship fic, two weeks late:
Second Chance with the Doctor's Companion (1062 words)
Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Relationships: Sarah Jane Smith/Harry Sullivan
Characters: Harry Sullivan, Sarah Jane Smith
Summary: Everyone in the town could see they didn't belong together. Sarah Jane Smith was the adventurous outsider with a mysterious past, and Harry Sullivan was the wholesome doctor. And Sarah's sudden departure just proved the rest of the town right...
Seven months later the Doctor dropping her off brings Sarah back into Harry's life, and once again he finds himself charmed by her. Everything feels different, but the risk of heartbreak is just as strong. But doesn't everyone deserve a second chance at happiness — even him...?

After not writing for so long it's been so hard to get back into it. I thought writing something earlier in February would help with the not writing for a bit after Yuletide, but it really didn't.

I wrote something for Obscure & British:
Eaten by a Dinosaur (264 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Press Gang
Characters: Lynda Day, Colin Mathews
Summary: The accounts really have been eaten by a dinosaur.

Despite it being less than 300 words it still took me three days and four drafts. Which is how I ended up only writing that one (well, so far).

It didn't really kickstart me into writing anything, but I gritted my teeth and I now have complete first drafts for my Unconventional Courtship fic and my NPT fic. They are terrible. One of them has a sentence that basically says: Stuff happens that I can't be bothered to write. One of them has 700 words, about 500 of which are rambly because I didn't know where it was going. But they have words. They have a beginning, a middle and an end. I have until Wimbledon starts to improve them...

In your own space, create a fanwork.

I have finally done this one! I had a whole load of things I could have finished off, but having spent January not writing it was really hard to get back into it. Now I have, I feel more confident about being able to get some writing done. Which is just as well, given that I signed up for [info]dw_guestfest.

This is a Star Wars Prequels fic and came out of the idea of Qui-Gon lives and then in Return of the Sith Obi-Wan is on the council and therefore outranks him. I had an image in my head of Qui-Gon calling Obi-Wan "Master". Which somehow ended up being 700 words long...

The New Master (705 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Star Wars Prequel Trilogy
Rating: General Audiences
Summary: The Jedi Council are concerned about Anakin. AU where Qui-Gon survived Naboo and took Anakin as his Padawan.

I intended to do this at the beginning of the month, but where did January go? I thought I'd better take a break from Fandom Snowflake and do this while we're still in the first month of the year at least.

[info]dw_remix is all over for this year. There were only three stories in the end, but the three people that finished seemed to have enjoying writing them, which is what matters. Next year I might just not bother with sign ups for people wanting to write remixes and people can write or not write. Less work all round.

I took a happy Twelfth Doctor and Missy fic by IrishVampire13: Cheek to Cheek and made it into a darker Twelfth Doctor and Missy fic: The Doctor Dances (Lucky Streak Remix). Having Missy in the first two episodes of this series helped rather a lot (and was why I chose that story to remix).

I managed to finish the first draft of my [info]sga-secretsanta fic! I'm quite impressed that it's 1600 words, but will get longer considering that I need to add the description and expand bits that say things like 'they went investigating and found x'. Not very exciting as it currently is. But at least the plot is there, making it less terrible should (in theory) be less hard.

I have my Yuletide assignment to do as well. And it would be nice to write some treats. And finish off some of the fic I have sitting around half-finished or half-started. But we'll see. Not least one of the things we'll see is how busy work gets.

I suddenly look really productive, because I have posted more fanfic today. I am not quite as productive as I look (one fic I posted recently I actually wrote in March and most of it is really short, even by my short standards). Don't be fooled into thinking I'm a fast writer.

Today's fic is:
The Home Team (896 words*)
Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Relationships: Ian Chesterton/Barbara Wright
Characters: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, John Chesterton
Summary: Barbara can never quite understand her husband and son's preoccupation with football.

*But 915 words in LibreOffice

This came from the audio The Flames of Cadiz, where Ian talks about football and his father taking him to matches. He always supported the home team - Sunderland - and still does (or at least did in 1963). It seems likely that Ian would take his son to football matches and Arsenal had a ground they were likely to live near, assuming Ian and Barbara settled somewhere near Shoreditch.

I then did a whole lot of research into whether Arsenal and Sunderland were in the same league when John would have been a child (assuming he'd been born in the late 1960s). They were in 1976-77. And in the 80s. Before I realised I was reading the table wrong, I learnt that generally when they played at Sunderland, Sunderland won. Despite this, Arsenal were often near the top of the table and Sunderland near the bottom (getting relegated to the second division a few times (no premiership in those days)).

Which is more than I ever thought I'd know about football.

I got 12 and a half hours of sleep last night. I finally don't feel tired - still a bit dizzy, but at least now if I sit down I can think.

While I was tired and dizzy I managed to write some first drafts of stuff. And today managed to finish one off - a short, silly Spooks fic, inspired by watching series 9 & 10 and noticing that Dimitri's top lip seems to be hairier at some times than others.
The MI-5 Moustache Growing Competition (308 words)
Characters: Harry Pearce, Dimitri Levendis, Ruth Evershed, Tariq Masood, Calum Reed, Erin Watts
Summary: It's November - time for Movember at MI-5.

I also put Sarah and Harry into the Unconventional Courtship Pairing Generator and the first summary it came up with was just perfect. So I know what I'm writing for [info]unconventionalcourtship next year.

And some snippets of WIPs because why not:

paranoidangel: Sarah Jane Smith, Sarah Walker, Sarah Jackson (Sarahs)

I woke up at 6am yesterday (so annoying, on a Saturday) and something made me think of Sarah Jane of the Chalet School. So I re-read it in bed and then made my way through the other Doctor Who/Chalet School crossover I'd written, and the one [info]hhertzof wrote. I thought it would be useful for getting me in the mood to go back to Lynda Day at the Chalet School. Which it sort of was, but then I liked the relationship between Sarah and Harry that I wrote in SJ of the CS so much that I've spent quite a bit of the weekend re-reading old Sarah & Harry fics.

Those were the days! It seemed like there was loads of it being written and it was great. Even going back and re-reading the stuff I'd written wasn't bad. There are things I'd change, if I was writing them now, but nothing massive. Which either means I wasn't too terrible when I wrote them or I haven't improved since. I don't really care which - I like them and mine's the opinion that's most important, after all.

I was moved to start a Sarah & SJA team up with Kate and UNIT fic. Although I have no idea of the plot, UNIT turn up at Sarah's house. Which then meant I had to go and watch Death of the Doctor, where UNIT turn up at Sarah's house at the start. And since I've been listening to some Jo Big Finish audios, Jo being in it was a bonus and not an excuse to watch it at all.

One day I'll finish a fic I started for a prompt-based ficathon. I currently have 7000 words of part 1, where the Fourth Doctor, Sarah and Harry turn up at UNIT while Martha is working there. And because a lot of fic seems to involve Harry having a crush/being in love with Sarah, this one has Sarah having a crush on Harry. (In Death of the Doctor she says she loved Harry, but I don't think she meant it in that way)

I've been thinking about posting and then haven't. I have all sorts of things started that I haven't finished or posted. Sometime I will. I've felt like I've got this huge to do list (and it is very long) to get through and I don't have any time during the week. I have crossed most of the things off my to do list, although there are some things I ought to get round to that I haven't even put on there yet.

Yesterday was the St George's Day celebration, so I helped on the Rotary stall. Theoretically for two hours, but I actually did four (with a break in the middle for lunch and looking around at what else there). And most of that was standing up. So that knocked me out yesterday (although did mean that since I spent the evening lying on the sofa, I did catch up on TV - there being a lot of election comedy stuff means you do have to keep up with it before it's really out of date).

And I somehow managed to finish my Spike/Lynda Unconventional Courtship fic: Aggressive Aggrandizement - titled with the aid of the most useful book for titling fics: the thesaurus.

Given that I've just finished a Chalet School book and a Press Gang fic now would be a good time to go back to Lynda Day at the Chalet School. But we'll see.

paranoidangel: PA (PA)

My posting date for [info]dw_guestfest was today, so I managed to finish my story yesterday. I probably could have finished it sooner if I hadn't spent so much time putting off adding description. I declared it finished partly because I was sick of reading it. And I'd run out of description-adding ability. It features Kate Stewart and Counter-Measures - it's the first story on AO3 with Ian Gilmore and the second with Rachel and Allison (I wrote the other one). Here it is on AO3: Time Team. (Posting it really wasn't helped by LJ logging me out every time I tried to preview it)

I was thinking I'd get it more finished this week, but they suddenly started making people redundant at work. My job is fine, but we now have fewer people in the department, so we're busy and lacking in motivation. It didn't help my motivation for getting anything done until last night when I could put work to the back of my mind for a bit.

But today I did some drilling! I tried it a couple of months ago for putting a front door curtain up, but didn't achieve much other than drilling through the masking tape. This time I was putting up a towel rail, which was easier because I could stand on the floor, but harder because you really had to get it the holes in the right place and couldn't draw through anything. But the instructions were great - they even told me what size drill bit to use.

I tried the first hole, didn't get anywhere, changed a few settings (the drill has so many settings) and finally managed to do more than make a dent in the wall. It looks so easy when other people do it, but in reality the drill is heavy and you have to push hard and I ended up with an aching wrist, even though I was holding the drill with both hands. I thought I'd do the other hole anyway, to get it out of the way. And I discovered (partly) why the old towel rail had not been terribly secure - half the wall is hollow. One minute I was drilling hard, the next there was no resistance.

So I'm not sure how long/well this one will stay up. It's also not quite straight, due to me not drilling the whole straight. But had I drilled the hole straight they'd have been slightly too far apart. So it's pretty much cobbled together, but considering it's the first drilling I've ever done, it's not bad. I can certainly live with it.
