Yuletide

For Yuletide I got another fic by Selenay (which I never guessed was her at all). The first 40-Love fic I've received!

Revelation in Three Acts (3715 words) by Selenay
Fandom: Cornetto "40 - love" Commercial
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Debbie/Maria Fernandez
Characters: Debbie (Cornetto "40 - love" Commercial), Maria Fernandez, Original Female Character(s)
Summary: There are certain promotional appearances Maria has never been able to say no to, but it takes a conversation with a stranger to understand why.

And then I wrote 8 stories - outside of Yuletide I only wrote 7 stories, and one of those was written at the same time. So it was a very productive time all of a sudden!

Writing

Oct. 18th, 2016 06:07 pm
paranoidangel: PA (PA)

I kept meaning to post, but I seem to either be busy or recovering from being busy. But I have crossed off quite a bit on my to do list.

The other thing I've been doing is writing. My Femslash fic is pretty much finished, aside from beta changes. And coming up with a title. I think the latter will be harder...

For Yuletide I got the fandom I was hoping I would. And then immediately wondered why I signed up for it because I couldn't possibly write it. And I didn't know what to write. I now have two bits of scenes and a vague idea of a plot and some notes for bits that'll come later.

But Public Call is due first, although the assignments for that only went out Sunday night. I had been looking at the signup summary to guess what relationship I might get. And then when I got my assignment, realised that I know more characters than the ones I signed up for and can in fact write a relationship I didn't sign up for. Which didn't help decide what to write... But then I woke up earlier than I needed to on Monday morning and now have a (very rough) idea of what I might write. Which is a start, at least.

And this is all much more writing than I've done all year, pretty much. It has done what I'd hoped and spurred me on to work on some of the (many) things I've started this year and next and not finished. I keep feeling like my writing is crap, so first drafts are fine, as they're supposed to be crap, but finishing things off, not so much. Even having had lovely comments on some (older) things with people saying how much they like it doesn't help. It just makes me think that I could write once, but can't any more. And by definition people can't say my current stuff is good because I don't have any current stuff that's finished.

But I have nearly finished my [info]dw_guestfest fic. It's only six months after the deadline and two months after the summer mini-round, but still a lot further than I thought I'd get two months ago. Maybe I'll even finish it...

Ficathons

Oct. 7th, 2016 07:56 pm
paranoidangel: PA (PA)

This is the time of year when I don't get much done. My evenings tend to be:
Monday: food shopping
Tuesday: Rotary
Wednesday: ballet
Thursday: choir
Friday: work/fall over
So my weekends are for all the other things I need to do. Plus going out and doing other things.

I have signed up for [info]public_call. There is some Classic Who in there (yay!). I dithered about my sign ups because writers can write relationships as shippy or gen. I considered only asking for ones I don't mind being shipped or only asking for ones I don't want to be shipped and putting something in my dislikes (which writers have to abide by). I ended up picking some of each and specifying for each. Hopefully people won't completely ignore what I've said and ship things I'd rather not (although if anyone ships Luke/Sky I'm going to be worried). I did discover why sometimes people write letters - it turns out that the 5000 characters you get in the prompt box is not much. At least not when you have 8 relationships and write a paragraph about each of them...

I've been dithering over my Yuletide offers. I put some safe ones in and wondered whether I wanted to write something new. I went through the tag set again and pulled out everything I knew, looked at the letters and made my decision. And when I went to edit my sign up I found that the fandoms I wanted to write most were the ones in my sign up. So I should probably not touch that then...

Thank you for writing a story for me. The optional details are optional. I've just tried to give you some ideas of what I might like to see, but if none of them are your thing feel free to disregard them. They are just ideas for people who find it easier to write something when given a prompt.

For these fandoms my requested characters are Any. That's because I find all of the nominated characters interesting and I'd equally like to receive fic about any of them in any combinations. Feel free to write other characters in the fandoms too - I like all the other characters in these fandoms too. Just because I've waffled more about some fandoms than others doesn't mean I want it more - I want these all as much as each other, I just waffle more about some than others.

General things I like:
- Stories that explore the relationships between characters
- Scenes/fic that is like it could be (part of) an episode
- Stories that make me happy or make me laugh or make me cry

General things I dislike:
- Sex scenes, so nothing over PG-13 please - generally sticking to the tone and details of sex/humour/peril etc of the original is good
- British people using Americanisms and American people using Briticisms
- Relationships other than those in canon (except when I've specified otherwise in my prompts - and for a certain definition of canon when it comes to The Last Leg RPF) - but you can never go wrong with gen
- Non canon (permanent) character death

Imzy is suddenly the new big fad. I have an account there that means I have a shitload of invites, should there be anyone left in the universe who doesn't have an account, but wants one. It's created by a former Reddit person to be the anti-Reddit (ie nice). It's a bit like LJ and Dreamwidth, but currently has all the lack of functionality of Facebook. But it is in beta, so maybe at some point they'll add some features that make it usable. At which point I might then use it. Although since you can import feeds, I have set my blog over there up to pull in my WP feed. I'm hoping that at some point this post will show up there. It will be at imzy.com/paranoidangel

(Dealbreaker usable features = RSS feeds and notifications that tell you more than just that you have a notification)

As with last summer I have done no writing for a while. In my defence it was a) hot, b) Olympics and c) both. It is still Olympics (as far as my watching of it is concerned) and then there'll be the US Open and Paralympics and Davis Cup all at once (although US Open is not on TV and Paralympics is not on the radio, from what I remember from four years ago).

But I am thinking of signing up to [info]femslashex. I've been meaning to do it for a while, just to give a go, really, but this is the first year I've remembered about it early enough to get some nominations in, so there'll be enough fandoms containing relationships I'm willing to write/read for me to sign up.

And then there's [info]dw_remix, which is running again this year. Go and sign up if you've written some fic in Doctor Who and related fandoms and would like/wouldn't mind someone remixing some of it. Or if you'd like to remix something in a Doctor Who or related fandom. I've made it easier this year, so you just choose what you want to remix and write something that's at least 100 words.

And then there's Yuletide. I have two fandoms I definitely want (Wizards vs Aliens and 40-Love) but beyond that I can't think of anything else. But I'm sure once it all gets going I'll be reminded of other fandoms and then have too many other things I want.

I can finally talk about what I wrote for Yuletide!

I've been either tired or trying to finish off my Yuletide fic or both. And then distracted by family things. Although my tendency to wake up early has given me some time to read some Yuletide fic.

I got three stories this year! Three!
The Librarian: Charlene is all about Charlene and how she came to work for the Library. I love that it's all about Charlene and just how you'd imagine it.

The Librarian/The Librarians: 5 Requests for Receipts involves receipt requests and Charlene. It's amusing and in character.

Quantum Leap: Just Add Marshmallows is a sweet Sam & Al friendship drabble.

Yesterday we went to see Star Wars. I was dizzy before we went and my sister made us all leave early so the adverts had barely started when we got there. The trailers were nothing I'd ever want to watch and made me dizzy, so I gave up on those and closed my eyes. And then the very first part of the film was the Star Wars logo getting smaller and making me dizzier, which didn't seem to be a good sign... But apart from getting my sister to read me out the beginning crawl, I just didn't watch the hyperspace bits or the space battles and I was fine (ish). And didn't miss anything.

On the whole, I'd say it was all right. I don't know why everyone's raving about it, but then I don't know why people rave about the original film either. But it did explain why someone at the work Christmas party (which had a Star Wars/sci-fi theme) had their hair in a silly style.

paranoidangel: PA (PA)

[info]dw_remix is all over for this year. There were only three stories in the end, but the three people that finished seemed to have enjoying writing them, which is what matters. Next year I might just not bother with sign ups for people wanting to write remixes and people can write or not write. Less work all round.

I took a happy Twelfth Doctor and Missy fic by IrishVampire13: Cheek to Cheek and made it into a darker Twelfth Doctor and Missy fic: The Doctor Dances (Lucky Streak Remix). Having Missy in the first two episodes of this series helped rather a lot (and was why I chose that story to remix).

I managed to finish the first draft of my [info]sga-secretsanta fic! I'm quite impressed that it's 1600 words, but will get longer considering that I need to add the description and expand bits that say things like 'they went investigating and found x'. Not very exciting as it currently is. But at least the plot is there, making it less terrible should (in theory) be less hard.

I have my Yuletide assignment to do as well. And it would be nice to write some treats. And finish off some of the fic I have sitting around half-finished or half-started. But we'll see. Not least one of the things we'll see is how busy work gets.

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Thank you for writing a story for me. The optional details are optional. I've just tried to give you some ideas of what I might like to see, but if none of them are your thing feel free to disregard them. They are just ideas for people who find it easier to write something when given a prompt.

- Swordfighting

General things I dislike:
- Sex scenes, so nothing over PG-13 please - generally sticking to the tone and details of sex/humour/peril etc of the original is good
- British people using Americanisms and American people using Briticisms
- Relationships other than those in canon (except when I've specified otherwise in my prompts) - but you can never go wrong with gen
- Non canon (permanent) character death

I am picky about crossovers and AUs (other than canon divergence) in these fandoms, and there's not a pattern I can articulate what I like and don't like. So if you have a great idea for one, it's probably going to be best to get the mods to ask me about it.

It must be autumn... Sign ups for people wanting to write a remix are open in [info]dw_remix, [info]sga-secretsanta has sign ups open and Yuletide has started discussing nominations. I haven't written anything since Remix, so being forced to do it will get me back into the habit.

The trouble I have at the moment is that watching things leads to me watching other things. I have seen Dark Matter, which I think I have finally decided I like (except for the first two cliched episodes and a few boring ones). It had Torri Higginson in a couple of episodes, which made me miss Elizabeth (from Stargate Atlantis). Just as I was thinking about it, [info]sga-secretsanta popped up. With a two a half month writing period, which I'll probably need, if last year is any indication.

I watched some Star Trek: Enterprise, which made me want to watch Quantum Leap. And now Quantum Leap is on my potential nominations list for Yuletide.

Since I was thinking about The Librarian/The Librarians for Yuletide, and getting excited about season 2 starting in November, I watched a few bits. Which made me want to watch Ugly Betty. Which was why I ended up rewatching it earlier this year (I am not rewatching it again).

paranoidangel: PA (PA)

I can finally talk about the stuff I wrote in November!

For SGA Santa I wrote Don't Worry I'm Happy which is a Shep/McKay fic where Rodney is happy. It turned out to be harder to write than it should have been. I originally wanted it to be slightly silly where everyone is annoyed at Rodney's happiness. But somewhere along the way it ended up gaining plot. And then I realised that it needed to be a long fic, like Big Bang long.

Maybe I'll write that one day, but I wasn't going to get that done in time. So I wrote a few more first drafts, made them less crap so they wouldn't be too awful to read and ended up needing [info]selenay to tell me which to go with.

I did set out to write gen and it was only the version I went with that ended up shippy. It seemed to need it and as I was writing from Shep's POV, it felt like the only reason he had for putting up with Rodney.

For Yuletide I was hoping to write Sixth Doctor and Evelyn and I got assigned them! I discovered, when I went to upload it this morning, that I hadn't written Evelyn before. It turned out to be a good excuse to break out the Sixie and Evelyn CDs and re-listen to them. I ended up writing Death by Chocolate Cake, which meant I spent some time looking at chocolate cake recipes (some of them are really overly complicated).

And I hadn't intended to write any treats, due to lack of time and energy, but while I was in bed with labyrinthitis I read [info]selenay Yuletide letter which talked about a tennis Cornetto commercial called 40 Love (and not 40-Love as the Yuletide fandoms lists it). It turned out to be from a series of short films sponsored by Cornetto with the theme of Cupid (called Cornetto Cupidity). I watched quite a few, as short things are much better when you can't concentrate for long. Kismet Diner was my favourite.

But all this time lying around in bed being dizzy gave me time to think and I knew exactly what I was going to write. I just didn't allow myself to write it until I'd done my SGA Santa and Yuletide assignment, as those were most important. But I could claim that watching the ATP Tour Final was research :)

Gift fics

Dec. 26th, 2014 03:13 pm
paranoidangel: PA (PA)

I think the December Talking Meme posts will finish in January because having the time and energy (and peace and quiet) all at once doesn't happen for long enough. But I'll talk about my gift fics instead.

For SGA Santa I got A Day in the Life of Elizabeth Weir, which is one of the few Elizabeth-centric gen stories posted. It shows all the different, interesting things she gets up to in the course of a day.

There are about 70 SGA stories posted, about half Shep/McKay, I think, but all sorts of things in there.

For Yuletide I got two stories! Both the only ones in that fandom. For The House of Eliott I got Backstitch in Gold, which is a lovely Bea & Evie story which shows just how they are as sisters: how they argue and how much they love each other.

In Press Gang I got Improbably Angels, which is a story of the relationship between Lynda and Mr Sullivan, who is perhaps her guardian angel.

And this post took longer to write than I thought because I got distracted reading it all again...

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Thank you for writing a story for me. The optional details are optional. I've just tried to give you some ideas of what I might like to see, but if none of them are your thing feel free to disregard them. I will love something you've enjoyed writing more than something you've struggled over to fit my specifications. I've requested characters I find particularly interesting in each fandom, so I will be happy with anything featuring them.

What I like:
- Stories that explore the relationships between characters
- Scenes/fic that is like it could be (part of) an episode
- Stories with happy endings (angst on the way is fine)

- British people using Americanisms and American people using Briticisms

Holiday

Oct. 11th, 2014 04:57 pm
paranoidangel: PA (PA)

As of yesterday I am on holiday. From work, I am not actually going on holiday, except for going out places. In fact today is one of the rare days when I'm not going anywhere.

So far my holiday has involved getting up early, driving for about four hours, randomly ending up at my sister's house (which was nearby and not really on the way, but did give me an opportunity to tell her I need instructions for when I'm actually supposed to be at her house), and doing something* to my back that meant I couldn't find a single position to sit, stand or lie in. And more lack of sleep. Basically some sleep would go a long way.

There is also Yuletide, which doesn't include SJA. It'll be an unusual Yuletide for me, not writing SJA treats at the end of Christmas - but by then I'll be a lot closer to my Lynda Day at the Chalet School deadline and should be working on that instead.

Talking of Yuletide, I have no idea what I'm going to request (let alone offer). I was happy with my choice of Press Gang, The House of Eliott and Wizards vs Aliens. But then people nominated The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot, Chalet School, The Avengers, Counter-Measures and Big Finish audios with Evelyn and Charley.

*It was a combination of having to sit on a bench (with no seat back), slightly sideways that did it in, the gardening didn't do much for it, neither did ballet, but then the driving finished it off.

Ficathons

Sep. 12th, 2014 08:15 pm
paranoidangel: PA (PA)

Sign ups are open on [info]dw_remix! Come and write a remix, you know you want to (you only need to write 500 words). The post looks like it's empty, but people have signed up - it's just screened so people can give their email addresses.

For Yuletide I think the three fandoms I'm going to nominate are Press Gang, House of Elliot and Wizards vs Aliens. I haven't changed my mind on this for a while, so I might well not change it come nominating time. Handily, assignments go out around the time [info]dw_remix is due, so they don't overlap too much.

I am considering signing up for [info]sga-santa. I need more ficathons at this time of year like a hole in the head, but I had a look at the sign ups and got all nostalgic. I'd have to rewatch quite a bit (what a hardship!) as I only vaguely remember some bits. But the sign ups don't close until [info]dw_remix assignments go out, so I am waiting to see what I'm going to write for that before I commit to this. And it does have two months writing time, which sounds more do-able.

And then there's Lynda Day at the Chalet School, which is ongoing over all of this. I haven't actually written anything on it since Wednesday because I've had other things to do with the time that I'm in the house, but I do have about 2600 words. I'm just about in the (apt) troublesome middle where I don't know what I'm doing, beyond trying to get to the vague idea I have for an ending. I probably need to watch more Press Gang and read more Chalet School (another hardship).

paranoidangel: PA (PA)

The Yuletide authors were revealed while I was driving at 50-60mph on a motorway through the rain, while the wind was trying to push me onto the hard shoulder. I've had better journeys.

My assignment was for The Ten Stupidest Things I've Heard Since Richard III's Remains Were Identified (Blog Post), which I was excited about, as that was the one I'd wanted to write most. Except that by the time I'd finished writing Doctor Who fics I was convinced I couldn't write anything. Writing OCs helped no end - for some reason I could make myself write my own characters, but struggled to believe I could write any others. I ended up writing The Phantom of the Newspaper. It's cracky (my recipient said "go to town" so I did), involving psychics, ghosts and newspaper reporters. Of all the things in it I'm most proud of the names because they came really easily.

The whole fandom has some great stuff on Yuletide and it's been such a good, fun fandom this year. For next year I'm tempted to make all my requests off-ball things I wouldn't usually consider fic in.

Once I'd finished that work had calmed down to the point where there was hardly anything on and I didn't have anything on in the evenings either, so I had plenty of time. [info]dbskyler had written some fics about Gita saving the world from aliens and requested it and I thought that would be fun to write. I still prefer hers over mine, but I wrote A Lovely Bloom, involving Sarah Jane, Gita and a very important flower.

After that I was done. Except that I mentioned being bored to hhertzof and she told me to look through Yuletide requests and write a treat. So I did (and made her beta it). One of the requests stood out as something I really wanted to see (and would have requested myself if I'd thought about it). So I wrote it. And reminded myself in the process how much I liked SJA. Sibling Secrets is about Sky going to visit Luke at Oxford.

This one was an example of writing the fic in such a way that the recipient would enjoy it. My first draft had a lot more detail about Oxford, specific shop names and a make of car that might not be known outside this country. I could tell from their request that they were American, so I took a lot of that out. If it had been for someone who knew Oxford then I would have made it even more location-specific because they might have enjoyed that, even if it meant the fic didn't make as much sense to everyone else.

I have finally made a dent in my Yuletide reading. And when the Madness archive opened I got another ridiculous Ten Stupidest Things I've Heard Since Richard III's Remains Were Identified fic: Tudor Spies and Perfidy. This has been a fandom I've enjoyed reading this Yuletide - it is different from everything else.

We opened presents on Boxing Day, as that's when my sister arrived (and they were a month late in any case). My sister decided to give me her old iPad, so I've been trying to work out how it works. In general I find Android more intuitive than iOS. I can't work out what to use it for - technically there are things, but I have a netbook and a laptop and my old netbook if I was desperate that does all the same things, but with the bonus of a keyboard. I have started Words With Friends on it, but it doesn't email you when someone's had a turn, so you have to go and check, which is not terribly well designed.

I have a Harry Potter Lego game which we are yet to play but took me about 45 minutes to construct...

paranoidangel: PA (PA)

Monday night's wind didn't do much for my back fence. Although I opened the curtains and watered the plants without noticing. It was only when I went to leave for work that I noticed the view out the back was a bit different to normal. Fortunately, it's my neighbour's fence, so I don't have to worry about it.

Despite it being quiet at work I managed to spend all of Tuesday morning working. Then it quietened down. But although in theory I have three bank holidays and three days when the office is closed (including today) I still need to do some work.

Today I woke up annoyingly early, drove in the rain with sunglasses on (it was bright and sunny when I left) and am now copying the files on my netbook so I can change to a different Linux distro.

I have read a grand total of one fic in Yuletide: mine (excitingly, I have another waiting for me in Yuletide Madness). It's R for Richard and is in The Ten Stupidest Things I've Heard Since Richard III's Remains Were Identified (Blog Post). I asked for something completely ridiculous (as far as I can remember anyway - sign ups were ages ago) and what I got was really utterly ridiculous and I love it.

Stuff

Dec. 10th, 2013 09:01 pm
paranoidangel: PA (PA)

I have finished my Yuletide fic! After I realised that I had a sentence in there that negated a whole plot point... Since I basically wrote two drafts a week last Sunday and finished it last Sunday I've effectively done it in two days. There was just some time in between where I thought about how to combine the two scenes that achieved the same thing. Now I'm just trying to find someone to beta it.

I need to sign up for [info]blakefest now that I've come round to the idea that maybe I can write for other people. Well, as soon as I decide what specifically I can write in Blake's 7 and what I want. In only slightly related news, my DW comm button doesn't work, but the ones for LJ users & comms and DW users does. Bizarre. But maybe when WordPress 3.8 comes out it will break it all/fix it all.

In non-writing news, I've skimmed through the thumbnails of my sister's wedding photos. There was one taken of everyone there and they made my sister and her husband kiss. So naturally, since I was standing behind them, I made a face. Sadly, my acting skills are non-existent and I can't make a face on command, so it doesn't achieve quite the effect I was going for.

The photo that makes me laugh is one of my sister and my mum sitting on a sofa and talking to each other. My dad is next to them and I'm hanging over the back talking to him - about Linux distros. Important conversation to have at a wedding.

paranoidangel: PA (PA)

I have been meaning to update for a while, but it's either been too busy or I've been too tired or both. Last weekend was my sister's wedding, which was good, but it meant I spent the day before recovering from her hen night and a few days after recovering from the wedding. Then I was out. Then I was recovering from the week and catching up with everything else.

Sunday I watched all the Doctor Who stuff that had been on on Saturday. I was so tired that I only really remember bits of it. It was just right for a lazy Sunday lunchtime, though. I am now Doctor Who'd out. I currently cannot take any more Doctor Who. I am hoping that I will have recovered from that by Christmas, in time for the Christmas episode.

I also spent the week convinced that a) I can't write, b) I can't write for other people, c) I can't write in the fandom I'm writing for Yuletide and d) the deadline's too close to be able to write anything. Which didn't help with my Yuletide writing. I did the staring at a blank page thing the other week and wrote some stuff, none of which I'm going to use (I ended up calling it v0).

However, I did spend some of yesterday looking up related things and had an idea just as I was going to bed. So then this morning I sat down and wrote the first draft. Hopefully, when I come to look at it again it will hold up okay.
