I wrote some stuff over the summer. Or to be more accurately, right at the end of summer when the deadlines were suddenly looming.

for [info]unconventionalcourtship I wrote:
Night of the Undead Science Project (1809 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Blake's 7
Relationships: Dayna Mellanby/Del Tarrant
Summary: Dayna Mellanby and Del Tarrant's evening turns deadly when some uninvited guests show up at a party - a horde of hungry zombies. The pair is in a fight for their lives when a new, heroic side of Dayna emerges, and she vows to protect Tarrant no matter the cost....

While I was researching this, I found this on Fanlore:

Danya/Tarrant is also usually upbeat, with the two joking with and insulting each other. It may involve an action-adventure plot, or some other excuse for Dayna to make something explode.

Which perfectly describes everything I like about the pairing.

I struggled with what to write for this, despite the summary being perfect. I'm not a fan of zombies, but I couldn't think of an alternative, except maybe for rebels, who don't know who Tarrant and Dayna are. But then Big Finish did that. And then I realised that zombies could be blown up, they stayed.

Originally the second sentence said: a new, heroic side of Dayna emerges. But I just couldn't manage that level of crack. And then I realised I can swap the names, and the fic practically wrote itself after that.

For [info]remixrevival I was assigned to someone who'd written a lot of canons I know, and has a completely different style to me, so I was spoilt for choice. I thought I wasn't going to be able to choose but then I'd read a Harry Potter fic and the next day it occurred to me that maybe Remus's reaction to Sirius announcing he's gay could be different, and therefore change the immediate aftermath.

Coming Out (The Non-Binary Remix) (1206 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
Relationships: Sirius Black/Remus Lupin
Summary: Sirius and Remus have very different methods of announcing their sexuality.

And then it turns out that [info]lost_spook unexepectedly (although it was probably her turn) got me and cleverly remixed Tea and Biscuits into
Coffee and Crumbs (The Idiot in the Attic Remix) (2145 words) by lost_spook
Fandom: Doctor Who (2005), Sarah Jane Adventures
Characters: Sky Smith, Twelfth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Mr Smith (Sarah Jane Adventures)
Summary: The Doctor always returns to Bannerman Road at the important moments. It's the timing that's so hard to get right...

I finally have time and energy and weather to post! Although that's not entirely a good thing because it means Wimbledon is nearly over. I already didn't know what to do with myself this evening - I have lots of things I need to do, but it doesn't seem right not to be watching Wimbledon.

But remixy things - the reading of which is one of the things I need to do.

Dancingsalome remixed my Lost for Words into:
Men of Few Words (1027 words)
Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Characters: Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, John Benton, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart
Summary: Aliens or teenaged daughters; it’s all in a day’s work for the Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

I remixed [info]lost_spook's Castle in the Clouds into:
All Russians are Spies (The Retirement Remix) (1278 words)
Fandom: Spooks
Relationships: Ruth Evershed/Harry Pearce
Summary: Ruth's happy, running a second hand bookshop in Devon. Harry, however, is bored.

Today I was going to go to London for my official birthday (technically it's tomorrow, but I have work and Rotary tomorrow, plus who celebrates on a Tuesday? and I've always considered my birthday to be the May Day bank holiday anyway). I have felt crap all weekend (tired and dizzy), but I thought I was getting better and I'd go.

I walked ten minutes to find that the path to the station (that is on the other side of the train tracks from here) is closed (I know the road was closed, but not that the footpath was too). I went along to see if there was an alternative route nearby, but no. The alternatives were an hour long walk (ish) or a drive, but it would cost me £6 (in exact change, no notes) to park. I ended up needing to go towards home as I decided which and ended up going home. After a twenty minute walk I was dizzy and needed a lie down and I was just worn out from walking. Which is not normal from just a short walk. So I am staying home and resting instead.

I did sign up for Remix. Most excitingly is they've dropped the requirement for qualifying in certain fandoms - which means I can properly put SJA down :) You can put down seven fandoms you qualify to be remixed in. It only goes to show how multi-fannish I am that I had to leave some off the list. And I didn't even bother checking to see if I was eligible for New Who (I suspect I'm not). Remix being late this year means there'll be a short gap between that and [info]dw_remix but that's not the end of the world.

What I think would be fun to do is a Remix Chain - sort of like Chinese whispers with Remixes. So person A would write a story, the only person in the chain to read it would be person B, who remixes it. The only person in the chain to read B's story would be person C, who remixes that, without having seen A's story. And gso on depending on how many people you have. And at the end everyone gets to read all the stories. It would be interesting to see, at the end, how like each other any of the stories not next to each other in the chain are.

Is anyone interested in giving it a go? We'd have to agree fandoms and characters and rules (eg no minimum word count).

Remix stories were finally revealed! So now I can post about mine: I wrote Dark and Stormy (The Last Tent Remix), which features the original team just before Jack takes up command of the SGC.

At this point I could talk about how I remixed etc, but because the deadline for posting is two weeks before the authors get revealed and I was finished earlier, I finished this a month ago, and therefore I don't remember. I probably should have written something a month ago and then left it in draft to pull out now, but I didn't think about that at the time.

I wasn't expecting author reveals until later tonight, but it's ok because it means I have time to talk about mine this evening. I wrote:

Can't See the Forest (A River Runs Through It) (1355 words) by faviconparanoidangel
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Amy Pond/Rory Williams
Characters: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Mels
Summary: Leadworth would be boring, if it wasn't for Rory and Mels. (Spoilers for Let's Kill Hitler)

When I signed up I secretly wanted to write Amy & Rory, so that worked out well. I also wanted to write a remix in a method I never had before. This being my seventh Remix (not including who_remix a couple of years ago) I've used quite a few different methods. This one was quite easy to come up with something. The original has Amy and Rory growing up and playing together in Leadworth. I added Mels. And changed details and changed who was doing what. And changed the romantic bit when they're adults from the original to fit in with a scene in Let's Kill Hitler. It was fun, I enjoyed it.

I will upload it to my website and Teaspoon too.

This week

Apr. 28th, 2012 01:44 pm
paranoidangel: PA (PA)

This week has mostly consisted of rain. And the fun yesterday of tipping out the puddle of water collected in my bin because the binmen persist in leaving the lid open after they've emptied them. And the even more fun of spending five minutes on Wednesday morning trying to get the garage door open long enough to get inside. How it eventually stayed open long enough to get the car out (and closed once I had) I don't know. But after that my car had to spend a couple of nights outside in the rain because there's only so many times I can do that.

I've also been reading Remix stories. I'd entirely forgotten what mine was, I finished it so long ago. Now I've been reminded about it I want to talk about it, but can't do that until the authors are revealed tomorrow/Monday. But someone remixed a Doctor Who/SJA crossover fic I wrote last year as New Horizons (the Doctor in the House Remix). It's got a whole load of great Sky characterisation in it. And I really want to know who wrote it and whether some of the references in it were because they know me, they read the fandoms list on my website or coincidence.

I have also been working on the second draft of my Big Bang fic. After I wrote the first draft I realised the plot makes no sense and it's not spaced out well at all. So I spent time re-working it, with tables to work out who does what in response to what. Hopefully, when I finish the second draft and read it through it won't be too bad and I'll just need to go back and sort out the words, rather than the plot. Not least because I'm also intending to sign up for [info]not-primetime/[info]not_primetime and the deadline is Wimbledon. My deadline for myself for getting my Big Bang to beta is Wimbledon. Which really isn't that far away...

A catch up

Mar. 28th, 2012 08:48 pm
paranoidangel: PA (PA)

Last week I was practically not in - Monday I went out to dinner, although not at the Chinese we were intending to go to. Wednesday was the last ballet of the term. We did a move I can't remember the name of that basically involved spinning round and going along. It did make me dizzy, but I wasn't the only one. Theoretically you should always be looking in the same direction but I kept getting confused and ending up facing the wrong way with no idea of how I got there. Thursday was singing and we've just started Gilbert & Sullivan that we're going to be singing at the carnival in June. And it's really hard! But on the plus side, we have have actual books that we own, so I can at least highlight all the black notes.

At the weekend I finally managed to start my Remix fic. I've got as far as the fiddling stage, but then I realised that it's just because I know I need to add description and don't want to. I have been writing a drabble or double drabble every day or every other day for [info]b2mem bingo. It's so much fun - it only requires you to start something and I thought a drabble was doable given that I started the month feeling crap. But writing one big story with all the prompts in might be fun too - especially as I have the 'Causes of death' card. Which means I've written lots of people dying (or having died) but also meant I got a bingo today! Which I am very excited about.

Now that the remix authors have been revealed, I can reveal that I wrote Feels Like Home (The Green Planet Remix), which is a Stargate Atlantis Five Things fic.

Every year I want to do something different for remix. This year I expanded something short (the original author called it a drabble). And I discovered writing early Rodney, when he hates everyone, is fun.

Today I posted my Remix fic. Which took ages - I can never get the A03 form right. But at least the archive was fast for once. But I did do it this morning, which probably helps. All I have to do now is wait for it to go live and the archive to go slow.

I am working on the rewrite/first edit of my Big Bang story. The rewrite and first edit are usually separate things, but I'm doing them in one go. The week before last I resented it a bit because I was trying to do a scene a night and it was taking up all of my evening that wasn't spent lying down (I can type while lying down, but it makes my back hurt). This week's been a bit better, partly because I've been staying up later to see if that'll make me sleep later, but also because I spent half the week to tired to do any writing.

But I have 24 scenes in this version and I have done 14 of them. So I am over halfway through. It's looking like it's going to be 20,000 words, if each scene that I'm keeping comes out a third as long as the first draft. So then I'll just need to find 5000 more words in the next couple of edits. I have two months until Wimbledon, when it'll need to be done, so at the moment it's looking doable, fingers crossed.

And since I posted a snippet at the Sci-Fi Big Bang comm, I will post it here too.

I've just been ill. All last week I kept waking up really early and being busy, so I just got worse and worse. To the point where I went to the Rotary District Conference on Friday and slept better than I had all week, despite the room being hot, the window being open and my roommate snoring on and off. Of course after that I didn't sleep so well and Rotary likes to start early, so I'm back to being dizzy again, although not as bad as last week yet, but then I haven't been back to work yet.

On the plus side, I finished the first draft of my Big Bang fic. It comes to 17,600 words, which is quite a lot considering the first draft is more of a plot outline with dialogue. I have to go back and change bits of plot now. Well, I say now, I mean after I've done Remix. But I have already decided what I'm going to do, I just need to find the energy to do it.

I also got my Ebook Reader (but not the cover, but that's a long story). It's great having so many books on it and I'm loving that you can change the direction you swipe your finger to turn the page - I always went the wrong way on Dad's. So far I've filled it with a couple of books from Gutenberg and a load of fics from last year's AU Big Bang which I've been meaning to read for months.

Speaking of, while I was looking for the 2010 masterlist for AU Big Bang, I looked at people signing up and what they're intending to write. And I thought there should be a Lynda Day at the Chalet School...

On writing

May. 31st, 2010 05:47 pm
paranoidangel: PA (Default)

I have finished my month of drabbles a day! I really did write one a day and not get ahead at any point. The month suddenly feels like it’s gone really quickly. Although I had a few days where it was a struggle to find the time to write or I couldn’t think of what to write, I did manage it. And never felt the need to make any of them a double drabble either – they nearly all came in at roughly the right length. They’re all on my website under the drabble a day tag. I also wrote every single prompt I was given.

I also wrote for Remix – although that I finished in April. I wrote Of Memory (The Poker Face Remix). Since I quite wanted to write Stargate I was happy to get someone who wrote Stargate. So that worked out well for me.

You might well ask what’s next. Well, apart from the unfinished fics I have sitting around that I will finish one day… Now I’m going to write 100 drabbles between today and 6th September (which is 99 days, incidentally). I didn’t mean to, it just came up in one of the comms I’m in. The plan at the moment is to write all of these centring around Harry Sullivan. We’ll see how well that goes, but the comm has only given me 75 prompts, so I’d love some more to fill the remaining 25.

Remix recs

So Remix went live late last Sunday and since then I’ve been reading everything in the archive. Well, everything in the fandoms I’m interested in. And I have managed to get it all read before the reveal tomorrow as well. So I have some recs.

After a week I’m now sick of the election. Or rather, what I’m sick of is listening to politicians fail to answer questions. Although there was an amusing moment the other day when I was listening to the news on my way home, wasn’t quite concentrating and thought Nick Clegg was Tony Robinson… Chris Addison has an amusing blog about it all. After my post about not being able to decide who to vote for I discovered the BBC website has a page where you can look at the policies of three parties side by side. So I spent a whole two days as an undecided, and decided to vote for the same party I decided I would have voted for in 1997 had the election been a week later.

I got my remix assignment and the person I’m remixing has mostly written in fandoms I know. So I could write pretty much anything. I’ve been skim-reading and I think I’ve decided, but reserve the right to change my mind.

I’ve discovered I’m intolerant to all gluten, although I can eat quite a bit of it. At this rate I’ll be intolerant to all food in ten years time. If they could just invent a pill to take every day that means you don’t have to eat that would do me. Although I’d forget to take it half the time…

Usually, when Remix happens, I try and read everything in the fandoms I know and get a recs list about before the reveal. But since that clearly wasn’t going to happen anyway, never mind that I only had four days to do it in, I’m still working my way through it. But some recs will find their way to Sel’s site.

I wrote my first ever Harry Potter fic: Sirius Black, Specialising in Sexual Education (The Master Becomes the Apprentice Remix). I didn’t mean to, it wasn’t one of the fandoms I put down that I’d write, but I couldn’t get it out of my head as I read the others.

The one that was remixed of mine was Suddenly a Small Fish (The Great Big Pond Remix) and as what happened with the TARDIS Big Bang, people seem unable to understand that the name I write under is not the same as my LJ name, but in this case it’s in a tag, so I can’t get them to change it.

I’ve got lots of things done this weekend, which was good. And then this afternoon the washing machine smoked… And this is where I’m very glad I rent because the landlord has come round and looked at it and it’s his problem, not mine.
