paranoidangel: PA (PA)

(I haven't posted a Never Seen Star Wars post for July yet because everything stops for Wimbledon. I'll post one in a fortnight.)

I wrote some fic! I started a Librarians fic a while ago because I realised that I wanted to write more Flynn and Cassandra friendship. And because I have post-ep fics for two other season 3 episodes, I clearly needed another one. And then last night's Doctor Who prompted me to write a fic related to it.

There are spoilers for The Librarians 308 And the Eternal Question, and last night's Doctor who below.

This is the post that I haven't had time to write, but have been reminded about by The Librarians and reading a whole lot of Stargate Atlantis fic for SGA Secret Santa.

Names are important. What names people use to call each other, more so. This was interesting when I was in LOTR fandom and read and wrote Aragorn, aka man of many names. For the first two years of his life he is Aragorn. For the next eighteen he is Estel. After that it all gets a lot more complicated.

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

When thinking about what to do for these, the piece that stood out for me was the first scene of the first episode of The Librarians. Which I managed to find on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNdBKqjPprc

When I first saw it I knew very little of what it was about. The first couple of minutes of this are not that exciting, with some military people and bad guys shooting at each other. And then the Librarian falls into the scene (literally). And is unconcerned about all the people standing around holding guns and is more worried about a magical artifact. At the end of the scene he introduces himself and I wanted to know more about what a Librarian did. And what sort of person he was.

There are some TV series it can take a while to get into it. Having watched all thirteen episodes of Dark Matter, I still can't decide if I like it or not. But with The Librarians, I knew I was going to like it by the end of that scene. Which is why it stands out so much.

And as a bonus, here's a [info]festivids fanvid for the first two series of The Librarians:

It shows how fun The Librarians is, but also fits the action to the words (which is how I think all fanvids ought to be). (warning: it is set to a Taylor Swift song - although I enjoyed it anyway)

It must be autumn... Sign ups for people wanting to write a remix are open in [info]dw_remix, [info]sga-secretsanta has sign ups open and Yuletide has started discussing nominations. I haven't written anything since Remix, so being forced to do it will get me back into the habit.

The trouble I have at the moment is that watching things leads to me watching other things. I have seen Dark Matter, which I think I have finally decided I like (except for the first two cliched episodes and a few boring ones). It had Torri Higginson in a couple of episodes, which made me miss Elizabeth (from Stargate Atlantis). Just as I was thinking about it, [info]sga-secretsanta popped up. With a two a half month writing period, which I'll probably need, if last year is any indication.

I watched some Star Trek: Enterprise, which made me want to watch Quantum Leap. And now Quantum Leap is on my potential nominations list for Yuletide.

Since I was thinking about The Librarian/The Librarians for Yuletide, and getting excited about season 2 starting in November, I watched a few bits. Which made me want to watch Ugly Betty. Which was why I ended up rewatching it earlier this year (I am not rewatching it again).

New fandom

paranoidangel: Flynn swordfighting (Flynn swordfighting)

I currently have one finished story and two started ones for The Librarians. Back when Fandom Snowflake was going on and I'd started watching it, I thought I could maybe write something for the challenge of doing something in a new fandom. But I dismissed it because I didn't have any ideas. At least, I didn't at the time...

I might have found a new fandom (because I never quite let go of old ones, I need new ones like a hole in the head). And another American ones means needing to write in American :( Although on the plus side, at least I don't get annoyed by all the rampant Americanisms in fanfic (unless they're being said by any of the non-American characters - but then I don't really read those characters). I think it could be a fairly popular fandom - at least if it gets another season. Or it's just a desperate fandom. The story for it that I posted a couple of weeks ago is my most kudosed story on AO3. Even though I didn't post it for a ficathon. And it's not in the top ten of hits.

It is, for me, yet another gen fandom, judging by the stories I've started so far. There is, perhaps, more of a desperation for gen. There are more stories marked with the most popular pairing than there are marked gen - and on the first page I could see two stories that were marked both shippy and gen (which I would think are mutually exclusive).

It all seems very weird to me, coming from a culture of 'if you don't post it on LJ in a relevant community or for a ficathon, no one reads it'. The fandom seems to be on Tumblr, from what I can make out. I considered joining Tumblr to interact with it, until I read stuff on searches on it and established that everyone either is a teenager or sounds like one. So I think I'll stay in my nice little bubble. And keep writing the gen (plus this one pairing I don't ship and there's no fic for but is fun to write. No, I don't know either).
